    Answer.

Subtense bar is an important measurement instrument used in surveying for measuring horizontal distances in undulated areas. It is a simple and compact instrument that consists of two vertical staves, a horizontal bar, and a target.

The subtense (movable hair) Method :

    • Subtense bar is identified as horizontal stave, used to measure horizontal and vertical distance in places where chaining is impossible because of undulations and rough topography.

    • It is a slow method and can measure short distance up to 200m.

    • The vertical subtense method is almost obsolete, only horizontal base subtense method is in use.

    • In horizontal base subtense method, a subtense bar of "S = 2 m to 3 m" length is used.
